HVAC

eCO2RAIL

eCO2RAIL is the name of a family of innovative ecological HVAC air conditioning systems able to respect the environment throughout the use of CO2 carbon dioxide (R744) as a refrigerant gas, suitable for installation on rail/metropolitan rolling stock also in countries with a warm climate such as Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece.

30% reduction of the annual energy consumption

CO2 HVAC systems are able to operate with reverse cycle (Heat pump) with efficient and effective heating performance in winter time even at low temperatures without the need to use heaters: in traditional HVAC systems, in heating modality, the in- convenience of a drastic drop in performance around zero degrees of ambient temperature requires the need to install electrical resistors (heaters) to achieve the performance required by the specifications.

F-GAS Regulation compliance

minimum possible GWP = 1

Certainty of refrigerant gas availability

for the present and the future not subject to market changes (it's not possible to guarantee the availability of traditional gases in future years )

Reduction of maintenance costs

Carbon dioxide has: cheaper cost (about 1 €/kg) than any other refrigerant gas and the certainty of maintaining the price in the future, because of its widespread use.

Competitive advantage

Being sustainable, green, environmentally conscious, nowadays is undoubtedly a competitive advantage; Green Marketing has become a new strategic lever thanks to the growing sensitivity of users/ consumers to the world of eco-sustainability.

Battery Thermal Management Systems (BTMS) Refrigeration Unit

BTMS-eCO2RAIL

Battery Thermal Management Systems (BTMS) are refrigeration units designed to manage the temperature of a heat transfer fluid (generally glycol water with variable concentration).

They offer a high degreee of precision (+/- 1°C compared to the set point) and the capability of regulation from 30% to 100% of the nominal cooling power of the refrigeration unit.

The systems produced by CPA Elettronica for the railway sector, as well as for the road transport sector, are modular and available in the following cooling capacity sizes:

  • 5 KW @ water between 15°C and 25°C; Outdoor ambient temnperature 40°C
  • 11 KW @ water between 15°C and 25°C; Outdoor ambient temnperature 40°C
  • 20 KW @ water between 15°C and 25°C; Outdoor ambient temnperature 40°C

The system is capable of both heating and cooling the water within the battery thermal management circuit with outdoor temperature ranging from -20°C to +50°C.

It is possible to choose from different working logics for the BTMS:

  • Direct Exchange with the External Environmental: in this case, heat exchange with the external environment occurs using an air/gas exchanger, and the system interacts directly with the external environment.
  • Indirect Exchange with the External Environmental: in this solution, the BTMS is equipped with two water exchangers. This system is more compact than the previous one, allowing for easier integration of the BTMS onto the rolling stock. The water/air exchanger, wich can optionally be supplied as an accessory by CPA, can be placed anywhere in the carriage, facilitating the system’s adaptability to various available spaces.

Production is possible with botth CO2 (R744) or R513A. Upon request, BTMS systems can be integrated with HVAC systems into a single refrigeration module capable of managing both thermal loads.
